It is not a surprise that a movie could be so technically strong and so emotionally weak. But what is a surprise is that everything that’s wrong with the movie was wrong before the cameras started rolling. That is what I can’t forgive.
The visual intrigue is on full display, but you would be hard-pressed to conjure up an argument that this is a world you want to stay in.
Well, not really. Donald Trump is still President of the United States. Hillary Clinton is still a private citizen. But for this one moment in history, it's as if the results turned out differently.
What is the opposite of woke? Mayonnaise? This is mayonnaise. A pale, bland option that makes everything worse because it is relying on fat content and not flavor.
This film is a haphazard meditation on the difficulty of life for people whose lives really aren't all that difficult. So self-absorbed, mostly joyless and ultimately not very poignant, I walked away feeling like my time was wasted. There are unending annoyances ingrained throughout, but more than anything, it is just a bore.
While its ambitions seem grand, when you break the film into pieces, it's really just Jackie--by herself--which may be art imitating life.
The Birth of a Nation is not some elevation of the form; nor is it a bastardization of it. It is instead an ambitious vanity project made without the skill necessary to really do the story justice.
