Oracene is a force and Ellis does her justice, going toe-to-toe with Smith in multiple scenes and giving the movie an emotional core it would have otherwise lacked. Tennis is always a back and forth and thanks to her, King Richard serves it.
The Safdies’ vision is so refined and distilled that it is hard not to be sucked into this world. Like an exquisite meal where you get something stuck in your teeth, at the very least, I can assure you you won’t forget it.
There are laughs, there are thrills, there is pathos, and it all comes together about as well as one would expect. The problem is that when you started with so much, isn’t it fair to expect more?
It is not a surprise that a movie could be so technically strong and so emotionally weak. But what is a surprise is that everything that’s wrong with the movie was wrong before the cameras started rolling. That is what I can’t forgive.
There’s a world in which this movie is made without Saoirse Ronan and it’s not one I want to live in. She single-handedly takes Lady Bird from being a character I had no use for to one with just enough complexity to keep me engaged.
Well, not really. Donald Trump is still President of the United States. Hillary Clinton is still a private citizen. But for this one moment in history, it's as if the results turned out differently.
