The plot is kind of inane, the events are wholly unrealistic, and the characters are ankle deep water, but there is enough flare in the craft that it’s not a painful ride.
What is most interesting is how close the film comes to horror in its third act. It is as intense as any full-fledged horror film you are likely to see this year. They turn the suspense up to 11 and then rip off the knob.
It is one of the very best superhero movies you will ever see. It is one of the very best animated movies you will ever see. And it is one of the very best examples of what is possible within this medium if people slow down and focus on infusing their work with the right amounts of everything.
There is no story here. There are no scares here. There is nothing but the slender outline of a wasted 93 minutes.
Choices made along the way leave us with a pretty unremarkable addition to this canon--unlikely to be remembered long after the Future-laden soundtrack is no longer in rotation.
